This week I have been thinking about a story I heard at the funeral of a 19 year old man who passed away unexpectedly. One of his family members related a story about him when he was having a bad day and was feeling sad. Instead of moping around, he decided he wanted to change his mood, so he got in his truck and went and shoveled the snow off the sidewalk of his neighborhood church. The church service would be the next day and he knew by doing this, someone else wouldn’t have to. Most likely, no one ever figured out it was him who had shoveled the walks, but I’m sure whoever was responsible for making sure the sidewalks were cleaned off, was grateful not to have to go out into the cold to shovel the heavy mounds of snow.
What amazed me about this story is that this man knew, as a teenager, that helping someone else would also help him feel better. This story has stayed with me over the years because it reminds me of why we serve other people.
So why do we serve others?
I believe we serve others to brighten their day, and to help them feel loved. Also, when we serve it helps US feel happy, and gives us a sense of purpose in life.
LET'S SERVE!
